“Torture of the Unstable”
is an exhibition that invites visitors to plunge into the most intricate mazes of their unconscious mind.
Divided into two distinct yet complementary rooms, the exhibition proposes a journey alongside Henri Michaux through a hallucinatory spectrum.
The first room focuses primarily on that fleeting moment when, after the ingestion of some intoxicant, everything begins to shift.
Our perceptions start to play subtle tricks on us, while our certainties waver.
Composed of works imbued with reality, this room presents fragments of a disquieting, bewildering, and incoherent universe—what Michaux might have called a “retinal circus.”
The second gallery forms a “paradise of the gaudy” a term coined by Henri Michaux.
It symbolizes the climax of the journey through chimerical realms, showcasing works of acid-bright and shimmering hues, pleasing to the eye and mind under such conditions.
Some of these works indeed raise questions related to automatism, the unconscious, and memory.
“Torture of the Unstable”
is not an exhibition intended to precisely reproduce the effects of any known psychotropic substance.
Rather, it adopts a suggestive approach, encouraging visitors to wander through a precarious world, fluctuating according to their own moods.
Without even realizing it, they find themselves immersed in an underground realm where anything becomes possible
a world where everything is still to be lived, much like the space in which the exhibition unfolds, or the ever-shifting explorations of the young artists on display.
